BUILDING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

Repentance
LESSON TWO: Repentance
________________________________________________________________________
Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:1-12
This is the first foundation stone mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-3. It is very important that we know the truth concerning repentance.
There are two words translated "repent" from the original Old Testament Hebrew. (1) "Naham" refers to the aroused emotions of God or man when undertaking a different course of action. It implies "difficulty in breathing," hence, "to pant," "to sigh," or "to groan." (2) "Shubh" is the Old Testament term generally employed to express the Scriptural ides of a RADICAL CHANGE IN ONES ATTITUDE TOWARD SIN AND GOD. It implies conscious, moral separation, and a personal decision to forsake sin and to enter into fellowship with God. It is employed extensively with reference to mans turning away from sin to righteousness.
In the New Testament there are also two words translated "repent," "mentamelomai" and "matanoeo." (1) "Metamelomai" signifies "to have a feeling or care, concern or regret. Like "Nahan, it expresses the emotional aspects of repentance. (2) "Metanoeo" expresses the true New Testament ides of a spiritual change implied in the sinner returning to God. It means "to have another mind." In the noun and verb form it occurs some fifty-seven times in the New Testament. It is also associated with the word "turn" and "describes that deep and radical change whereby a sinner turns from idols of sin an self unto God."
Repentance involves the informing and changing of the mind, the stirring and directing of the emotions to urge the required change and consummating in the action of the yielded will in turning THE WHOLE MAN AWAY FROM SIN UNTO GOD!
