HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE

Many of us who would like to study the Bible are afraid to tackle it, thinking that perhaps we do not have the knowledge of "how to" study it properly so as to arrive at the Truth.  Others of us who endeavor to study the Bible do so with a nagging thought that perhaps we are not studying it "the right way".   For this reason this course of study is not a doctrinal course, but rather is a "How To" course  designed to aid the serious student of the Scriptures in their study of God' Word.

Beginnings

To start learning the Bible first requires that we read it.  And not just read, we should read as students.  G. Campbell Morgan used to say that he never began studying a portion of the Scripture (a Book, a Chapter, a Verse etc.) until he had read it completely through at least 40 times!  Reading and re-reading a portion of the Bible will help our minds to "clear" of preconceived ideas and to begin to see the patterns that are in that part of the Holy Book.  Repeated words, phrases, certain references will begin to become apparent as the Scripture is read repeatedly over the course of days and weeks.

Time

Do not get in a hurry.  "But let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."  Time is a great leveler, and it can be a teacher.  Do not get in a hurry.  Study takes time, effort and endurance.

Preparations

Before we learn how to study the Bible we are going to look at some things that will help us study the Bible.   These lessons are designed so that you may print them and keep them in a notebook for future reference or  use them to help someone else learn to study the Bible.  Please feel free to reproduce them and share them with those who want to learn.

Questions

Why should we study the Bible?  Read Romans 12:1-2 and answer this question:  According to these two verses of Scripture how are we to be totally changed?
In what way are we changed?  The word "transformed" is used only in two other places in the New Testament.  Mark 9:2 and Matthew 17:2.  In both of these instances it is translated "transfigured".  The Greek word used here means: "to be totally changed from one form into another".
So......why should we study the Bible?

Of course there are other reasons for studying the Holy Scriptures.   You can find some of these reasons if you will read the following verses:    John 17:17    John 20:30 - 31    II Tim. 3:16-17
